Rio de Janeiro…..ahhh one of our favourite cities. We enjoyed our time here so much and we had some pretty jam-packed days surrounded by chilling by the beach and watching some amazing sunsets. After spending some time here, we have developed our ultimate 4 day Rio Itinerary for first timers to the city!
Some of these activities rely on some good weather. It is best to stay flexible and pretty much everything on this list can be organised the day of, so you can pick the best weather for each activity.

Day 1
Check into your accommodation
Choose the perfect accommodation for you, but we would recommend the areas of Ipanema or Copacabana if it is your first time in Rio. Ipanema is a little more upmarket but a little more pricey. We chose to stay in Copacabana as we found a really cute studio apartment on Airbnb which was perfect for what we needed.

Evening plans
You might be a little tired or absolutely buzzing to see what Rio is like in the evenings. A perfect spot for early evening in Rio is seeing the sun set for the first time at the Pedra do Arpoador. This is one of our favourite sunset spots in Rio.
Make sure you get here 1hour – 45mins before the sun sets to get a good seat on the rocks. Bring a little cash so you can buy a snack or a drink to enjoy as the sun starts to set.
If you have more time on your first day, you can check out one of the many beach spots to relax and soak up the sun rays and the Rio beach vibe.
Day 2
Morro Dois Irmãos hike
The perfect start for your first morning in Rio is the Morro Dois Irmãos hike. The trail is open until sunset but the best times to go are either this for sunrise or early in the morning e.g. start around 7/8am. The hike takes around 1 hour up and 1 hour down, plus a ride through Vidigal favela on a mototaxi which is an experience – but totally safe!
For the sunrise hike you can either do this self guided or with a tour. Just make sure you start hiking with enough time for it still to be dark on top. If you do the hike later, aim to start the hike before 8am. At this time the trail and the viewtop is relatively clear and the sun isn’t too hot.
If it has been raining, the trail can be really slippy. Also cloud cover will completely obscure the view, so make sure you do this on a good day.

Santa Teresa & Seralón steps
After you have had a quick nap after your early morning hike book onto a Santa Teresa walking tour. Your tour might include the Seralón steps but if not, you can go early or after you tour to see them. The benefit of a walking tour in this area is so you can i) learn about the area and ii) stay safe. The area is pretty safe but like with all neighbourhoods in Rio you have to be aware of where you are walking.
See a show at the Municipal Theatre
After the walking tour you will be relatively close to the area of Cinelandia. This area is home to the Municipal Theatre which holds shows almost daily in the evenings. The outside of the building is beautiful and the inside is just as beautiful.
Tickets are quite reasonably priced but make sure to book your tickets in advance.
Day 3
Helicopter ride over Rio
One of the most unbelievable things we have ever done! We’ve never been in a helicopter before and what better place to do it than in Rio! It’s an expensive activity but well worth it, especially the doors off experience!!
We booked with Rio2Fly and had the most amazing experience from start to finish. It was a little cloudy on our day but we got to see Christ the Redeemer emerging from the clouds which was pretty epic!
We booked only a few days before when we could see the weather forecast which was perfect as the day before had been extremely cloudy.
We did a 4pm flight and the sun was behind Christ the Redeemer, for better photos a morning flight is better 🙂
Enjoy a beach afternoon
Provided it’s a sunny day, when in Rio you should dedicate at least 1/2 a day to some beach time. If you’re not the type to lie on a beach you can also surf/play volleyball or chill at a beach side bar.
Food tour
Later that day you should book onto a Brazilian food tour. Rio has some amazing Brazilian restaurants which cover food from all over the country. The food tour we did had such a good range and we got to try so many amazing foods and learn more about the history of the country. The one we booked with Free Walker Tours Rio was perfect!
Day 4
Christ the Redeemer
Today is the day! Undoubtedly the most iconic thing in Rio, Christ the Redeemer is a must visit. You can go up via scenic train, van or hike. Before you make your choice make sure to read our complete guide to all 3 options which give the full cost comparison as well as tips.
Whether you arrive in a van or by train, book the first slot in the day to have few crowds. You will still have a lot of people to compete with for a picture, but by going first thing you might be at the top with a much smaller crowd compared to arriving 30 mins later.
Parque Lage
After seeing Christ the Redeemer, take an Uber to Parque Lage. This free park is lovely to walk around, seeing so many beautiful trees, plants and animals. In the middle is a palace (under repairs currently, due to be finished in June 2026). From here you can look up and see Christ the Redeemer – where you have just come from!
Parque Lage is also the start point for a few hikes in the Tijuca Forest.
Botanical Gardens
If you haven’t had your fix of nature yet, you should definitely check out the Botanical Gardens. Although it’s not free it’s a beautiful addition to your day, including iconic palm tree avenues and beautiful flowers.
Sugar Loaf for sunset
Finally for sunset on your last night you should go to the best panoramic views of the city for sunset – Sugar Loaf Mountain. If you want to go at sunset you should book your tickets slightly advance to secure your time slot before the cable car stops taking people up.
On certain days the view point has a DJ playing from 4pm for sunset, check out the dates & times on the Parque Bondinho website here and move this to a different day if you want!
As we said before this itinerary is super flexible and most of these activities you can book a day before (if not the day of) so you can really mix and match depending on your tastes and what the weather is looking like.
