Moalboal, located on the southwestern coast of Cebu, is a popular destination for travellers who visit Cebu Island, seeking a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
It’s famous for its marine life, white sand beaches, and laid-back atmosphere.
We included Moalboal in our 3-Week Philippines Itinerary, which you should absolutely check out if you’re planning a trip to this STUNNING country!
How to Get to Moalboal from Cebu City
Getting to Moalboal from Cebu City is actually quite straightforward.
First, you’ll need to hop in a taxi or trike to Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT), which takes about 30 mins and costs roughly 250 PHP (£3.30 or $4.33).
Once there, look for a bus that goes to “Bato via Barili”, “Badian” or “Moalboal.” You won’t need to check for a schedule, since they leave super regularly throughout the day (roughly every 30 minutes).
Grab your ticket from the ticket office near the entrance to the bus terminal, then follow signs to the correct bus.
Costs vary depending on the exact bus – we were on an air-conditioned bus which cost 209 PHP (£2.81 or $3.69) per person.
Once you arrive, you may need to grab another trike to your accommodation, but there’ll be plenty of them available, so talk to a driver and agree a suitable price.
We took the bus journey in the dark but other people have said that the bus ride offers scenic views of Cebu’s countryside and coastline!

Private transfers are a little more expensive, but super convenient, taking you from the airport straight to where you need to go.

Where to Stay in Moalboal
There are plenty of accommodation options for all types of travellers, whether you’re on a budget or looking to splurge.
- Budget Stay: Chief Mau Hostel is a favourite among backpackers for its social vibe and affordable dorm beds. It’s also close to the beach and dive shops. This is where we stayed and the staff were SO lovely and attentive.
- Mid-Range: Maayong Hostel offers private rooms, perfect for travellers who want to enjoy Moalboal without breaking the bank.
- Luxury: Secret Paradise Moalboal provides a more luxurious experience. It is close to the beach, has an outdoor pool, garden, terrace and top-notch service. It’s a great choice if you’re celebrating something special or just want to relax in style.
Things to Do in Moalboal
1. Snorkel with the Sardine Run
One of Moalboal’s biggest draws is the Sardine Run, an incredible natural phenomenon where millions of sardines swirl in mesmerising patterns just off Panagsama Beach.
You don’t even need a boat or tour guide to see them, just grab your snorkel and swim out a few metres. You’ll be swimming among the sardines in no time!
If you don’t have your own snorkel, you can rent one from any one of the diving shops on the beachfront.
The best time to see the sardines is first thing in the morning, although we went back later in the afternoon and still saw them – although we’re told that you’ll see A LOT more in the morning.
2. Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls
An absolute MUST for adventure-seekers! Canyoneering was our favourite activity in Moalboal by far. You’ll be able to do this at nearby Kawasan Falls, known for its many levels of cascading blue water, which is just a short drive away from Moalboal.
You can only enjoy the experience as part of a tour – which is great anyway, since a guide will come with you as you descend to keep you safe, as well as provide life jackets and a helmet.
After getting dropped off at the briefing area, you’ll start from the upper levels of the falls, which you can reach by a short walk or an optional zipline experience!
Once started, you’ll make your way downwards following the flow of the river, jumping into pools, sliding down natural rock slides, and trekking through the waters.
It’s an adventure, but definitely suitable for beginners too. Launch yourself down the natural waterfalls and enjoy nature’s own water park!

3. Explore Pescador Island
Take a short boat ride to Pescador Island, a prime spot for snorkelling and diving. The underwater world here is full of vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and colourful fish. It’s one of the best places to dive in Cebu, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver.
You can take a tour from Moalboal to Pescador for the day and you can book this in person at one of the many dive shops in Moalboal.
4. Swim with Turtles
Moalboal is also famous for its resident sea turtles. Stick around at Panagsama Beach where you can snorkel alongside these gentle creatures. It’s a magical experience and one of the most unforgettable things you can do in the area.
TIP: the majority of local guides have underwater go pros, so they can take some epic pics of your underwater activities!
5. Scuba Diving
If you’re a certified diver, Moalboal is a dream destination. Its reefs are home to a diverse range of marine life, including reef sharks, colourful corals, and giant schools of fish.
There are plenty of dive shops offering guided dives, PADI certifications, and even night dives if you are more adventurous!
6. Visit White Beach (Basdaku Beach)
For a more laid-back experience, spend a day lounging on White Beach, also known as Basdaku Beach. With powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s the ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, or enjoying a quiet sunset.
It’s less crowded than Panagsama Beach, making it a great spot to relax and unwind.
7. Try Local Food at Panagsama Beach
Panagsama Beach isn’t just famous for its sardine run, it’s also the centre of Moalboal’s nightlife and dining scene.
After a day of exploring, treat yourself to some delicious local dishes. Try out Ven’z Kitchen for affordable Filipino favourites or The French Coffee Shop for a great breakfast or brunch.If you’re craving something more international, Shaka Moalboal serves up tasty smoothie bowls and burgers.
8. Sunset at Panagsama Beach
End your day with a perfect sunset at Panagsama Beach. The view of the sun disappearing into the horizon is the ideal way to cap off an adventure-filled day in Moalboal.
You can find a few bars with seats on the beachfront as well, so you can enjoy a drink as the sun sets.
9. Nightlife
Moalboal is known for its relaxed, beachside vibe, but it also offers some great spots for nightlife.
- Chili Bar – This is one of the most popular spots in Moalboal. Located right on Panagsama Beach, it offers a lively atmosphere, great drinks, and music that draws in locals and tourists alike. It’s a go-to place for socialising after a day of diving or exploring.
- Pacita’s Disco Bar – A local favourite for dancing and late-night partying. It’s one of the few places where you can enjoy a real nightclub experience, complete with energetic music and a dance floor.
- Ven’z Kitchen Bar – Known for its chill, laid-back atmosphere, Ven’z offers good cocktails and delicious food. It’s a great place to relax with friends and enjoy some live acoustic music.
Moalboal is a paradise for adventurers and beach lovers. From diving into the sardine run, chasing waterfalls, or simply relaxing on the beach, this coastal town offers a little something for everyone.
